Key words:

neonatal liver tumor, neonatal pyogenic liver abscess.

ABSTRACT

Both liver tumors and pyogenic liver abscess are rare entities in the neonatal period, but thanks to the methods of imaging diagnostic, these lesions are identified with greater regularity. These entities have similar features on image so it is important to review the most common tumors in this age group to compare characteristics with each other and be able to make more accurate diagnoses when evaluating this type of injury. A case of a newborn with a hepatic mass is presented; this mass was evaluated by ultrasound, considering the diagnosis of liver tumor vs. liver abscess due to the similarity between the findings.
These findings could form part of the characteristics of each of these conditions, for this reason it was decided to follow up the lesion during a given time to evaluate its progress and establish the final diagnosis. Imaging diagnosis is a standard for the evaluation of pediatric liver disease. Thanks to imaging techniques such as ultrasound and computed tomography (CT), diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of these diseases has changed favorably.
