ABSTRACT

Introduction: One of the most important aspects in pediatric dentistry is to control behavior, uncooperative children requiring drug management as sedation and general anesthesia. Objective: To establish oral and identify needs that dental treatment is most often performed under general anesthesia. Material and methods: The study design was retrospective, transversal, observational, descriptive and clinical. We reviewed the clinical records of patients undergoing oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia in Pediatric Dentistry Service, January 2004 to December 2010. For statistical analysis we used SPSS version 12.0 for Windows. Results: 510 patients were studied. Ages ranged from 1 year to 17 years, and the mean of 9 years. 49.2% were healthy and 50.8% had a systemic disease. The cases had neurological in origin. The chrome steel crowns was the most frequently performed treatment. Conclusions: General anesthesia is an alternative non-cooperative patients, young age and/or systemic diseases in order not to cause increased risk to patients with conventional estomatological treatments.
