ABSTRACT

Brain water is distributed between blood, cerebrospinal fluid, interstitial and intracellular compartments and moves across these compartments following differences in osmotic and hydrostatic pressures.Brain edema occurs bywater accumulation resulting fromblood brain barrier disruption (vasogenic edema) or by increase in cellwater resulting either from a hyponatremic condition or by osmolyte redistribution between the extracellular and intracellular compartments (cytotoxic edema). In most pathologies, one type of edema gradually results in the development of the other type. The role of aquaporins in the generation or/and the control of brain edema is nowextensively investigated.This reviewinforms about recent result on this topic.
