ABSTRACT

Peroxisomes are endoplasmic reticulum-derived organelles in eukaryotic cells, which have diverse metabolic roles in response to environmental changes and cellular demands. The functional importance of peroxisomes in humans is highlighted by peroxisome biogenesis disorders. The accompany changes in enzyme content or abundance of peroxisomes are accomplished by dynamically operating membrane- and matrix-protein transport machineries. This review addresses recent progress in understanding peroxisomal biogenesis, proliferation, degradation, as well as its relation with mitochondria.
