ABSTRACT

A discussion of Clinical Laboratory current practice, at the beginning of the third millennium from a global perspective on several items is presented including:

• The historical evolution of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
• Presentation of the Vision, Mission, Goals, Structure, and Activities of WASPaLM.
• Analysis of the issues affecting Pathology practice worldwide today.
• Description of global quality trends toward regulations and certifications under international standards such as ISO-15189.
• Mega-trend analysis of several issues including the increase in outpatient laboratory services, increase in molecular pathology testing, increase in corporate laboratory activity, increase in quality system applications, decrease in the number of pathologists and other laboratory professionals in the clinical laboratory, decrease in
training programs in laboratory medicine, decrease in payment for laboratory services, decrease in local standards including accreditation, and finally the inclusion of Laboratories as a part of economy service.
• Finally an optimistic prospective view of the future of Laboratory Medicine is expressed inviting all the professionals involved to continue working hard in order to re-define our roles in the changing environment of the clinical laboratory.
