ABSTRACT

In the absence of instruments that allow a formal and systematized evaluation of levels of psychological well-being of different ethnic groups in our country, and particularly of the Totonac group, this research sought to analyze the Coping Response Inventory psychometric functioning for CRI- Y that assessed Totonac adolescents^ coping strategies. The sample was formed by 456 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, 187 women and 269 men, students of telesecundarias and telebachilleratos in rural communities of the municipality of Papantla, Veracruz. Mexican adaptation of the CRI-Y (Vallejo, Osorno, Mazadiego and Segura, 2007) was used for this study. The results indicated a good internal consistency of the instrument both in general and on the global scale. Factor analysis showed the same factors identified by Moos, contrary to results reported in research conducted in Spain, United States, and Mexico. It is important to note that the instrument showed better performance with indigenous adolescents than with urban adolescents, this may indicate the importance of considering specific cultural conditions of each population that generally are overlooked. Counting with instruments of psychological evaluation for these ethnic groups can be useful for the design of programs to support their overall well-being.
