ABSTRACT
The following study includes a brief outlineand general
classification of the main ceramic materials employed
in current dentistry.
With the aim of drawing attention to some of the
structural characteristics of these ceramic materials,
images obtained using Scanning Electron Microscope
(SEM) imaging at different magnifications revealed
details of dust and sintered ceramic structures.
Similarly, a number of the properties of the ceramic
materials were compared against those of other
According to the literature, oxide-based ceramics
display homogeneous microstructures and the
properties needed to ensure the level of reliability
required of materials used in dental restoration. Glass
ionomer materials and ceromer composites,
meanwhile, can rightly be regarded as hybrid ceramic
material because of the high concentration of ceramic
components in their formulas.
Discussion. The evolution of ceramic materials is
progressing rapidly and their future in stomatology
points towards their serving as replacements for
metallic materials and to greater hybridization with
polymeric materials. The evolution of the ceramic
materials advances dynamically and the future of these
materials as stomatology materials goes in direction of
the replacement of metallic materials and towards
more hybridization with polymeric materials
restorative materials. The main tests performed to
characterize the properties of the ceramics are also
described.
