ABSTRACT

One of the greatest challenges in dentistry practice is to be able to replace tissues that have been lost through injuries or disease. One result of this endeavor has been the development in recent decades of a science known as Tissue Engineering, which proposes new therapies involving the regeneration or replacement of tissues or organs by means of three-dimensional constructs that restore form and function, using the patient's own cells along with biomaterials and biomolecules. In the case of the regeneration of tissues such as pulp, bone and oral mucosa, significant progress has been made, which has, in certain cases, already led to clinical applications. Tissue engineering has given rise to a new field of dentistry: Regenerative Dentistry, which connects basic sciences such as physics, chemistry, materials science and cell biology, to offer patients treatment options focused on tissue regeneration. Despite the progress in this area, the research has a long way to go before this therapy becomes reliable and is applied in the clinic.
