ABSTRACT

Programmed cell death or apoptosis is a crucial mechanism to eliminate damaged or infected cells, as well as cells that disappear during the embryonic development. Failure in the coordination of this process results in pathological consequences such as cancer, cardiac insufficiency, autoimmune diseases and infertility. Apoptosis is a phenomenon conserved along the evolutionary progression. The experimental studies in genetically less complex organism than mammals, have given insights into the molecules and events related to apoptotic pathways. We offer an overview about the biological importance of apoptosis, and point out that the most relevant information about this process is based in basic research done in more accessible organisms.
