ABSTRACT

Supernumerary teeth are defined as an excess in the number of ordinary teeth that occurs in both primary and permanent dentition, and constitute one of the most frequent tooth anomalies diagnosed by dentists. This phenomenon can present itself as single or multiple, erupted or impacted, unilaterally or bilaterally, and can be found in the upper and lower jaws alike.
The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of supernumerary teeth in a population of patients in the city of Buenos Aires that had been prescribed panoramic X-rays.
The panoramic X-rays of 627 patients were evaluated; the sample consisted of 331 females and 296 males. A total of 19 supernumerary teeth were recorded, 6 in females and 13 in males; the highest proportions were found in patients in the first and second decades of life, with 7 supernumerary elements each. We found 14 of these anomalies located in the maxilla and 5 in the mandible.
The distribution of these supernumerary teeth was as follows: 12 were located between the upper central incisors, 5 in the premolar region, and 2 on the distal aspect of third molars. The results were analyzed statistically, revealing no significant differences between the frequency of supernumerary teeth among the three age groups, at a level of confidence of p‹0.05, whereas significant differences in the frequency of supernumerary teeth were found between the genders (p=0.025403).
