ABSTRACT

We report a case of a 32.5 week gestational newborn who died of respiratory failure 18 hours after birth. The autopsy showed a sequestered lung lobe directly irrigated by a branch of the aorta. Histologically, we found hyaline membrane disease (HMD) in the lung tissue irrigated by the pulmonary artery and absence of HMD in the sequestered lung irrigated by the aorta. In the few cases reported in the literature on the association of HMD and extralobar pulmonary sequestration, the lung tissue irrigated by the pulmonary artery showed HMD, and not so the sequestered lung, suggesting greater importance on ventilation in the pathogenesis of HMD, whose exact causes are unknown.
