ABSTRACT
Objective. To study some variables that could be associated to the fetal death by anencephaly.
Material and methods. The information was obtained in 3,673 fetal death certificates since 1990-1995, 27 of them were by anencephaly. Some variables related to the parents and fetus were analyzed, in order to compare the fetal death by anencephaly and other causes.
Results. The death attributed to anencephaly was significantly higher in females [odd ratio (RM) 2.2 (IC95% 1.6-2.8)]. Same findings were found in illiterate mothers [RM 1.5 (IC95% 1.1-2.0)] and fetus with weight below to 2,500 g [RM 5.6 (IC95% 4.0-7.8)].
Conclusions. We do not have any explanation for the higher risk of anencephaly in females. In regard the illiteracy of mothers the risk could be explained by factors of the environmental poverty were usually they live.
