ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the hypoacusia frequency in term newborns by hearing screening.
Patients and methods: Hearing screening by otoacustic emission (four frequencies) was done by request in newborns without asphyxia during their nursing state. A score less than 5 decibels was considered abnormal. The confirmation was made at month of age by eight frequency otoacoustic emissions and, brainstem auditory evoked potentials. The frequency was counted in 1,000 studies.
Results: 76 of 432 newborns had abnormal studies [17.6%, IC95%: 10.4-24.8%]. The hypoacusia was confirmed in three (6 x 103, IC95%: 1-20 x 103). One newborn had microtia-atresia and, ipsilateral hypoacusia; remain had unilateral hypoacusia without malformation, defined as idiopathic corticopathy. All received hearing support and rehabilitation. The patient with microtia will receive a cochlear implant. The other with abnormal results had transitory immature hearing loss.
Conclusions: Frequency was similar as world report. The hearing screening was sensitive for hypoacusia detection. Although the benefit justifies the screenig, its implementation will depend on the cost.
