ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the relationship between physical fitness and nutritional status in a Mexican schoolchildren group.
Material and methods: Seventy-one children aged 6 to 12 years participated. The nutritional status was assessed by body mass index and body fat percentage. The FITNESSGRAM battery was used to assess the physical fitness.
Results: Most of the children had adequate cardio-respiratory capacity, strength and flexibility of the trunk. The children with normal BMI showed higher values in aerobic capacity, curl up and push-up tests than those with obesity, being the differences statistically significant. The body fat percentage was negatively correlated with cardio-respiratory capacity and strength of upper segment.
Conclusion: Among school children the excess of body fat seems to negatively affect the cardio-respiratory capacity and strength.
