Head and neck extracutaneous melanoma. Clinical-pathological study of 19 cases

ABSTRACT

This is a retrospective, descriptive and transversal study in which were analyzed the clinical and pathological characteristics of 19 malignant mucosal melanomas of the head and neck. 63% presented in males and 37% in females. The average age was 55 years-old, with limits between 18 and 84 years. The main clinical characteristics were local enlargement (73%) and hiperpigmentation (16%). They were located in the oral cavity (37%), nasal cavity (26%) and ocular orbit (21%). 21% of the cases were suspected clinically. 37% of the cases were treated by surgery. 37% of the cases presented metastasis. Microscopically the main data were that 32% presented junctional activity 37% had diffuse growth pattern, 27% were formed by epithelioid cells and 89% of the cases were pigmented.
