ABSTRACT

Microscopic enteritis and colitis are characterized clinically by chronic diarrhea syndrome and normal endoscopic studies of ileum and colon. The cases of two patients with clinical symptoms of chronic diarrhea syndrome and normal endoscopies are reported. They underwent biopsies of terminal ileum with an anatomopathological diagnosis of lymphocytic ileitis, one of them associated with mixed connective tissue disease, and the other with celiac disease – a review of disease was conducted. A third case is also reported; a patient who presented, clinically and likewise, a chronic diarrhea syndrome with normal colonoscopic study, but the histological study showed criteria for a diagnosis of collagenous colitis not associated with another disease. When there is a diagnosis of microscopic colitis or enteritis, it is important to evaluate the patient comprehensively and look for the possible disease or causal agent. Additionally, and depending on the clinical data provided, the specialist in Anatomic Pathology may express in the biopsy reports the possible associated diseases, thus contributing to a more precise diagnosis and implementation of individualized treatment.
