The Development of Hypothetical Deductive Reasoning in Students of Medicine from Research Methodology and Statistics

ABSTRACT

Antecedents: the process of learning of the subject Research Methodology and Statistics is necessary to develop ways of thinking and logical skills reasoning, linking the statistical content of medical practice and social life, as a methodological resource for developing hypothetical deductive reasoning. Objectives: to identify deficiencies in the teaching-learning process of the subject in the second year of medical career. Methods: a diagnosis was made based on observations of student behavior in classes, with emphasis on solving problems related to medical practice. Surveys were applied to teachers and students. The program of the Medical Informatics subject was revised. Results: was obtained a set of difficulties that limit the development of deductive hypothetical reasoning were observed: students tend to memorize the Statistics contents, there were also found difficulties in applying statistical procedures and interpretation of results. The teachers do not sufficiently link the various statistical content of medical practice to achieve the hypothetical deductive reasoning development. Conclusions: Changes are required from methodological point of view on traditional forms of teaching content to resolve the contradiction revealed between the need of develop hypothetical deductive reasoning and insufficient exploitation of the potential of statistical content.
