Dental Caries in Type II Spinocerebellar Ataxia Patients

ABSTRACT

A descriptive study in 43 patients with type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia from June to September, 2006 was carried. The study was aimed at determining the degree of affection by dental caries, as well as, to establish some of the possible associated etiologic factors. The authors took into consideretion the patients´ previous informed consent in order to have an oral examination and to interview them. COP-D and Buccal hygiene of Love index were determined, and the relationship between clinical and molecular variables were established. The results showed that COP-D index of SCA2 patients was high, prevailing extracted teeth. 74.4% of the patients had poor oral hygiene, and there was a significantly correlation between the number of CAG repetitions (p≤0,05) with COP-D and oral hygiene of Love index. The authors concluded that these patients had poor oral hygiene, for that reason they need an especial dental care ,as well as, to develop promotion and prevention activities in order to improve the oral health.
