ABSTRACT

Background: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine carcinoma, even when it represents only 1% of all cancers. Its incidence appears to increase in a 4% each year, and today is the eighth most common cancer among women, appearing mainly in the ages between 25 and 65 years old.
Objective: To characterize the behaviour of thyroid cancer in the province of Cienfuegos.
Methods: A descriptive, ambispective and longitudinal study was conducted with a total of 62 patients operated on at the General Surgery Service of the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital from 2006 to 2010. The variables analyzed included: annual incidence rates, age, sex, location and histological type of tumour, and current status of patients. Results: There were more female patients, being papillary carcinoma the most commonly diagnosed histologic variant (85.19%). The highest incidence was registered in 2010. The age group from 41 to 50 years old was the most representative. The largest number of cancers (79.03%) was diagnosed in stage I.
Conclusions: The very high incidence of thyroid cancer in the province of Cienfuegos in the last five years, has provoked an increased monitoring of this condition which is evidenced through the early diagnosis resulting from this study.
