ABSTRACT

Somatization is an important health care problem that generates high costs; however, the estimate of its prevalence is hindered by a categorical approach as compared to a dimensional approach. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the psychometrics properties of the Somatic Symptoms Scale (ESS-R; Sandin, 1999), for its utilization in general population as a diagnostic instrument. A sample of 554 adult (273 women and 280 men) was collected. The internal consistency was high (α = .96 for the total score and from .74 to .90 for the factors). The differences by gender were significant in the ESS-R nine factors (p ‹ .05). The structure of correlated 4 factors with 9 indicators each one, cardio-respiratory symptoms (α = .86), gastrointestinal symptoms (α = .80), genitourinary symptoms (α = .81), catarrhal or flu-like upper respiratory tract symptoms (α =. 80), female reproductive system symptoms (α = .83), musculoskeletal symptoms (α = .75), fatigue and sensory neuropathy (α = .83), allergy (α = .76) and dermatological symptoms (α = .74), got a data fit from good (χ2/gl = 1.79, RMS EA =. 04 and AGFI = .90) to adequate (RMS SR = .07 and GFI = .94) by Generalized Least Squares method. The scale ESS-R showed reliability and validity. It is proposed to evaluate its relationship to other similar instruments and to establish its normative data.
