ABSTRACT

Photohemolysis test is used for determining the phototoxic potential of products that damage the erythrocyte membrane under the action of ultraviolet-visible light. Through this paper the photoirritant effect of Parthenium hysterophorus L., was evaluated as a risk assessment test, according to in vitro techniques in toxicology. Also secondary metabolites of the vegetable extract responsible for the effects we could perceive were determined. The results showed hemolysis at low concentrations and the hemolytic concentration 50 for irradiated and non-irradiated samples was 0,02 mg/ml and 0,05 mg/ml, respectively. On the other hand, the optical density values and the hemolytic factor obtained were lower than the classification range in each case. The presence of certain metabolites which could be, in part, and in different proportions responsible for the hemolytic effect that was obtained, was confirmed by phytochemical sifting. We got to a conclusion; the Parthenium hysterophorus L. soft extract is photoirritant.
