ABSTRACT

Introduction: The incidence of vitamin D deficiency is high in the critically ill patients and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and its relationship with length of Intensive Care Unit stay, ventilator days and outcome.
Methods: Prospective, observational and descriptive study in an intensive care unit. A total of 50 critically ill patients were included. All patients underwent determination of serum levels of 25 hydroxyvitamin D.
Results: Seventy-eight percent of the sample (36 patients) presented 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency, 16% (12 patients) insufficiency and only 6% (3 patients) had normal levels. No correlation was found between vitamin D levels and mortality, length of stay in the Intensive Care Unit and days of mechanical ventilation.
Conclusion: The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency is high in critically ill patients.
