ABSTRACT
Introduction: Laparoscopic surgery is always evolving in the field of minimally invasive surgery, and with it, new technology is being developed, which in turn facilitates the performance of surgical procedures. For diseases such as appendicitis, it is the gold standard in some cases as in female patients of childbearing potential; however, it is not contraindicated at any age; it rather depends on the surgeon skills. Currently, single-port laparoscopy is being employed for this type of pathology with good results. According to the history and literature, the single-port laparoscopy is used increasingly to become the gold standard for the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, including cosmetic appearance.
Methods: We performed a comparison between conventional laparoscopic appendectomy against single-port laparoscopy and literature review.
Results: Single-port laparoscopic appendectomy, has proven effective, safe and reproducible; however, the surgeon must have adequate training to know when to place an extra port, convert to conventional laparoscopy, leave a drain or even convert to open surgery to avoid complications.
Conclusion: The single-port surgery is a reproducible, effective and safe procedure, which is being conducted in different pathologies of surgical resolution where conventional laparoscopy is the gold standard, including cases of complicated appendicitis.
