ABSTRACT

Toxic megacolon represents a lethal complication mainly of inflammatory bowel disease, or infectious conditions, and less frequently from obstruction from volvulus, pelvic tumor and intraluminal obstructive tumors. Diagnosis is made by clinical evaluation for systemic toxicity and imaging studies depicting colonic dilatation. Plain abdominal imaging remains the most establishes radiological instrument and tomography computerized (CT) provides additional information. The optimal timing of surgery for toxic megacolon can be challenging; in this report we review a case presented as toxic megacolon which was the culminating effect of the underlying inflammatory state and the resulting decreased smooth muscle contractility as consequence of obstructing colon adenocarcinoma.
