Focusing family as an aid in treatment of disability. Considerations to improve relationships among medical personnel and the family

ABSTRACT

The National Institute of Rehabiltation has focused its main objectives upon the conception of integrative rehabilitation of patients. Biopsichosocial orientation is so considered the main target of medical attention. Current meaning of disability involves the relationship among individuals and the barriers existing throughout their surrounding environment, including physical obstacles as well as related interacting social groups. Those fundamental groups are the family and the health-care personnel. From the so-called systemic point of view, family can be described as a complex that interacts with other social groups. Literature about disability depicts the family as a potential source either of obstacles and social pathology, or as a true support that actually enhances improvement of patient. Present paper is intended to persons of families and medical teams that must permanently bear in mind a better understanding of their patient’s disability and on a more accurate performing to relief limitations and to encourage integration.
