Giant parathyroid adenoma: a case report

ABSTRACT

We present the case of a 69-year old woman, with a history of primary hypothyroidism, who sought medical attention because of a palpable anterior neck mass, associated with mild hypercalcemia. A parathyroid adenoma was documented by means of technetium sestamibi scanning and high resolution neck ultrasonography. The patient underwent surgical exploration of her neck, with resection of a large parathyroid adenoma. Giant parathyroid adenomas are extremely rare but should be included in the differential diagnosis of palpable neck masses.
