ABSTRACT
Geometric principles play a fundamental role in image formation. In dentistry, these principles are taken into account when taking X-ray images, in order to determine the ideal distance between a tooth and the X-ray source. The further away the X-ray source is from the tooth, the narrower the angle of projection; and hence the closer the image projected on to the Xray film will be in terms of size and shape to the actual anatomical structure.
The aim of this study is to determine the minimum distance between the lower second molar and the X-ray equipment at which the size and shape of the tooth are accurately reflected in intraoral X-ray imaging.
A series of X-rays were taken of the lower second molar at a distance of between 50 and 65 cm from the X-ray source. We concluded that 62 cm is the minimum distance at which the true size of the second lower molar is most accurately reflected in conventional intraoral X-ray imaging.
