ABSTRACT

Background: sexually transmitted infections constitute one of the most common pathologies in the world. Among them, we have the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) which constitutes the final stage of the infection by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Objective: to characterize the positive cases to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and describe the behaviour of its risk factors.
Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study of 17 patients who have been diagnosed as HIV positive in "Carlos J. Finlay" Polyclinic in Marianao Municipality was performed during the year 2010. The data were collected from case records of the program for the control and prevention of HIV in the polyclinic and variables such as age, sex, race, education level, occupation and associated risk factors were analyzed.
Results: the most affected age group was the one from 40 to 49 years of age with 6 cases. 13 of them were male, there was an increase of cases in the black race, the largest number of sick people was high school graduates, 9 of them were dissociated from work and 10 did not have a steady partner.
Conclusions: the disease prevailed in people over 40 years of age. It predominated in the male sex, in the black race, in high school graduates, in people who are dissociated from work, in people who have unprotected sexual relations, in homosexuals and in people having family and partner instability. Associated infections such as genital herpes and syphilis also appeared.
