Pentalogy of Cantrell in neonatal intensive care. Report of three cases

ABSTRACT

This paper reports on three clinical cases pertaining to pentalogy of Cantrell (PC): the first is associated to omphalocele, Fallot’s tetralogy and atrial septal defect; the second is also associated to omphalocele, double outlet right ventricle and patent ductus arteriosus; and the third case to pulmonary branch stenosis. The first two cases were treated by systemic-pulmonary fistula; the third was discharged from the hospital as a candidate for branch pulmonary plasty. At the one year follow-up, the first case is in good condition; the second case died during the post-surgical period due to pulmonary hypertension, and carcinogenic shock. Though PC presents challenges not only for neonatal care teams but also for surgical teams, by focusing on a multidisciplinary medical care approach, some of these children can survive.
