ABSTRACT
The essential biological function of the temporomandibular joint is motion, whereas disruption of the articular surfaces results in the alteration of its homeostasis. Articular cartilage, the main component of the temporomandibular joint, is a hydrated matrix which allows in appropriate conditions biomechanical properties such as smooth mobility of the joint and prevents friction between bony structures of it. Alteration of cartilage matrix is the beginning of the intra-articular degeneration. Polyvinylpyrrolidone collagen is composed of collagen tissue regenerator and polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer enhances its effects, has various therapeutic applications as hypertrophic scars, wounds, burns and tissue regeneration properties and in pseudoarthrosis. Participates in the temporomandibular joint in regeneration and tissue remodeling, has a fibrinolytic effect and promotes the endochondral regeneration; acting at principal level of proteoglycan (aggrecan) in cartilage. We conducted a descriptive experimental research pro-tocol in patients with osteoarthritis of temporomandibular joint Regional Hospital «Ignacio Zaragoza» of ISSSTE of Mexico City in the period January 2009 to July 2012 using a sample of 144 arthroscopies in 72 patients with initial diagnosis of internal degeneration of temporomandibular joint with pain analog scale qualor greater than six, detecting osteoarthritis in 18 joint streated operatively and application of collagen polyvinylpyrrolidone during operative arthroscopy as an adjunct in the treatment of chronic temporomandibular joint degeneration obtaining significant clinical improvement in the medium term.
