ABSTRACT

Objective: Because the risk of obviating critical data for the right acid-base diagnosis we developed a work sheet with systematic steps that will allow to identify the dominant disorder. This work sheet can be an useful tool to improve the diagnosis precision of the acid-base balance problems. Setting: An ICU of a tertiary care hospital, Mexico City. Methods: Using a computer program (Microsoft Excel 2000) we designed an automated work sheet for the analysis of acid-base balance in the critically ill patients. Laboratory test (pH, PaCO², HCO³-, the serum concen-trations of Na, Cl, K, glucose, BUN, albumin, ammo-nium, lactic acid and osmolarity, as well as the values of urinary pH, Na, Cl and K were registered. The precision of the obtained data (basic-acid status) can be verified using the Henderson-Hasselbalch and the Henderson equations or following conventional rules.
