ABSTRACT

Objective: To present the results and impact of an educational program on critical care of pregnant patients. Design: Descriptive study. Setting: ICU of an obstetrics and gynecology hospital, Toluca, Mexico. Material and methods: We reviewed the files of patients admitted to the ICU and a comparison between the mortality rate, scientific production and human resources formation of 1993-1996 and 1997-1999 were analyzed. Interventions: None. Results: A total of 623 patients (mean age 29.6 ± 8.1 years) were admitted to the ICU during the study period: 237 from 1993 to 1996 and 386 from 1997 to 1999. During the second step (1997-1999) a decrease of mortality rate was observed, seven gyneco-obstetrician were trained in critical care, and four thesis, 15 articles, two chapters of book and one book on preeclampsia-eclampsia were published. Conclusion: These results suggest that a critical care medicine course may improve the quality of care of obs-tetric patients.
