Hypothyroidism, Newborn screening.

ABSTRACT

Congenital hypothyroidism is the most common disease in pediatric endocrinology and in turn is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation. Early diagnosis is established by examining the levels of neonatal Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), since only a small percentage of children presented symptoms in the neonatal period. We present this case to high-light the importance of early diagnosis, and the usefulness of Neonatal Screening (NS) in a universal way to avoid sequels. We describe a case of a newborn at Hospital Medica Sur, who was diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism at six days old.
