ABSTRACT

Introduction. In Mexico, treatment schemes for patients with uterine myomata and abnormal uterine hemorrhage still are hysterectomy as definitive treatment and pharmacologic management. We have to keep in mind that some women do not want to be operated on, and in some patients surgery constitutes a high risk procedure. Objective. Uterine arteries embolization by percutaneous approach using polyvinyl alcohol for treatment of myomata and abnormal hemorrhage is evaluated. Material and methods. Polyvinyl alcohol microparticles of 300, 500 and/or 700 microns of size were required. Treatment was carried out at the Hemodinamycs room, patients were submitted to epidural anesthesia and femoral arteries were selectively accessed, then polyvinyl alcohol microparticles were placed in uterine arteries using a Cobra catheter, a microcatheter or a Roug catheter. Results. Six cases performed from September to present day are presented. Only one patient with tight arteries (1.3 mm) could not be selectively cannulated; the other five women were successful embolized without major complications. Patients showed pain, that is described as part of procedure success in the all the literature reviews.
