ABSTRACT

Replacement Knee Arthroplasty is used for treaten ing osteoarthritis. lt is Contraindicated in infections, deficit in extensor mechanism or severe neuropathy. At present, There are many treatment options as are resurfacing prosthesis, articulated prosthesis and condyle implants.
At present, despite the development of several kinds of materials and refined techniques, complications about knee arthroplasty can be devastating. From mechanical joint erosion, biotolerancia, arthrodesis, tissue loss and even amputation of the segment. These complications are dependent on concomitant diseases as diabetes, arthritis, smoking habits and nutritional status.
Tissue loss is often secondary to infection or seroma, and it can be from 1 to 15% approximately. And if it's not treated rapidly losing supracondyleal arthroplasty and amputation are frequent complications.
Treatment of choice for these cases are regional muscle flaps wich have been successfully described. This article describes several techniques of muscular f laps frequently performed for treatment of secondary defects around knee dueto a failed arthroplasty, emphasing about benefits of gastrocnemius medial muscle flap.
