ABSTRACT

Keratoconus is a corneal ectasia that impairs visual function. Treatmen with penetrating keratoplasty is successful in 90 100% of cases, but success rates of 50% have also been reported. The proportion of eyes that underwent a penetrating keratoplasty that had a transparent graft in our hospital, after one year of the surgery, was identified. Material and Methods. Retrospective, cross sectional, observational, and descriptive study. Eyes that received a corneal transplant to treat keratoconus between 2003 and 2007, of patients from any gender, aged 11 60 years, with a one yearfollow up. The proportion and 95% confidence intervals of transparent grafts after one year follow up was identified. Results. Fifty two eyes from 52 patients aged 11 51 years (mean 29.3) were evaluated; six patients had a previous graft rejection (11 .5%). Thirty five eyes developed rejection during follow up (67.3%, I.C. 95% 54 to 80), which involved in 25, so 42 eyes had a transparent graft at the time follow up ended 80.7%, I.C. 95% 70 a 91 %). The incidence of rejection in eyes with and without previous rejection did not differ statistically (p = 0.1 ). Discussion. The incidence of graft rejection was higher than that reported, but a proportion as high as the international reference could be achieved. Features that allow accessing the best success rate should be identified in the future, in order to integrate them to the care process of the patients with a corneal transplant.
