Notes on the history of leukemia

ABSTRACT

The First published description of a case of leukemia was present by Velpeau in 1827. Eleven years after, Donné described a patient with an excess of white blood cells, and in 1845 a patient with an enlarged spleen in which death took place from the presence of purulent matter in the blood, was reported by J.H Bennett. The term leukemia was coined by Virchow in 1856. Further advances in the understanding of leukemia occurred rapidly thereafter by several scientists like Ehrlich, who developed a technique of staining cells, Neumann, who recognized that the blood cells were made in the bone marrow, an Norwell and Hungerford who described the Philadelphia Chromosome in patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia. In 1947 the pathologist Sidney Farber acquired folic acid antagonists, that were available to him by the biochemist Subbarow, and administered to children with leukemia observing temporary remission. Today, scientific progress like the successful therapeutic application of imatinib in patient with certain forms of leukemia, has provided a proof of target therapy in patients with various types of cancer.
