Prevalence of hearing impairment and associated risk factors in newborns of Colima state, Mexico

ABSTRACT

Objective To know the prevalence of new born hearing impairment in Colima state and associated risk factors.
Patients and method A cross-over study with a sample of 1,223 participants from Colima state, Mexico. Both ears were explored in all newborns, timpanometry, otoacoustic emissions test and brain stem evoked auditive potentials were done too, the latter in newborns with two positive otoacoustic emissions tests.
Results In 1,223 randomized newborns (648 females, 575 males) timpanometry and otoacoustic emissions had sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 94% in second test; three newborns with positive result of otoacoustic emissions test were detected, two with risk factor (ototoxics during pregnancy, p = 0.007) and one patient without risk factor. Hearing impairment diagnostic was corroborated by brain stem evoked auditive potentials. Prevalence was 0.24%.
Conclusion Otoacoustic emissions test is a convenient study for newborn auditive evaluation. In Colima state, Mexico, there is not difference in prevalence of hearing impairment compared with previous reports.
