ABSTRACT

Introduction: Insufficiency of the Subcutaneous Reticular Venous Plexus (ISRVP) is invisible to the human eye and has been poorly studied to date. Objective: We wished to demonstrate that ISRVP is a new pathology.
Method: Our patient cohort comprised 260 female cases of ISRVP diagnosed using Total Reticular Vision (TRV) a spectral and infrared illumination device. Cases of deep venous thrombosis, chronic venous insufficiency or advanced varices were excluded. Patients were clinically evaluated with TRV, Doppler, Duplex by indication and photographic control. We validated some cases using X-rays, biopsy and photoplethysmographic studies. Patients were evaluated at 3 and 18 months post-treatment.
Results: ISRVPs showed CEAP Classification of C0,1,A,S,EP, As, PR, and a prevalence of 58%. They were exposed bilaterally and were scarce overall throughout the body but more numerous along the lower extremities. ISRVPs arise in childhood (ages 1-6) before Telangiectasia and other superficial venous alterations, and with or without a clinical picture of superficial venous insufficiency. Post-treatment, > 90% of ISRVPs disappear, as do 83% of symptoms. There were few recurrences.
Discussion: Due to the lack of bibliographic references to ISRVP, the results of this study allow us to consider it as a new subcutaneous venous pathology that requires further study.
