Educational Intervention on Drug Addiction in Teenagers

ABSTRACT

Introduction: drug addiction is a global problem that mainly affects young people. In Latin America, this phenomenon tends to increase. In Cuba, the illicit use of drugs is controlled as the result of the policy established by the country, where health promotion is the leading mode to attack the problems of substance abuse in adolescents.
Objective: to improve the level of knowledge about drug abuse through a strategy of intervention in a group of adolescents in Mario Gutierrez Ardaya Polyclinic health area, that belongs to Jesus Menendez Larrondo High School from January 2011 to January 2012.
Method: a community intervention to 51 teenagers was implemented. Three stages were considered: diagnosis, design, intervention, where participatory techniques were used and evaluated. A questionnaire was validated by experts before and after the educational program was implemented, which allowed to determine the knowledge on the subject.
Results: in relation to the level of knowledge about drug addiction, before the intervetion was implemented, 47.06% was rated poor, 31.37% was regular and 21.57% with good evaluation, which denoted low knowledge on the topic. After the intervention was implemented the results were the following: 82.35% were excellent, 13.72% were good and 3.92% were regular. It showed a positive result over the initial stage.
Conclusions: educational intervention programs with the use of participatory techniques, implemented in school, were an effective tool to modify the knowledge about drug abuse in young people.
