ABSTRACT

Background: Enterococci are responsible for 9% of nosocomial infections (NI). Most of them are originated from the patient’s own flora or acquired from another patient transmitted by the serving staff. To determine the frequency of infections by Enterococcus in a period of 10 years in a pediatric hospital in 3rd level and characteristics Methodology: We performed a retrospective, observational, descriptive in pediatric patients diagnosed with infection by Enterococcus January 2002 to December 2011, determine the annual incidence rates overall for the period of study describing the characteristics of the study population. Results: We detected a total of 249 infections caused by Enterococcus, with an incidence rate of 5.2 of nosocomial infections by Enterococci per 100 infections at the hospital. The infection is present primarily in patients under 1 year of age, being the department of surgery who had the highest number of cases 15.6%, by type of infection were bacteremia major infections 53.8% cases and have found some common factors in the such as the use of venous catheter in 69% and have been subjected to some type of surgical intervention in 86% of cases. Discussion: Enterococcus is an agent that every day becomes more important as a cause of IN according to this study especially in children under 1 year of age, having a history of having undergone surgery or have venous catheter so it should be studies to determine whether these may be risk factors for the submission of Enterococcus infection.
