ABSTRACT
Introduction: The aim of this study is to estimate the frequency and distribution of malignant neoplasms in health jurisdictions in the state of Oaxaca, México.
Material and methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients diagnosed with cancer who were treated during the period from 1999, to 2011.
Results: There were 508 cases, 52.6% were male, mean age of 6.9 years. More incidents were seen in preschool children and early adolescents. The main tumor was acute leukemia in 53%, followed by lymphomas (12.2%) and central nervous system tumors (8.2%); the highest frequency was observed in the central valleys (35%).
Discussion: Only two health jurisdictions were similar to the «Latin American» pattern. The Mixteca and Tuxtepec jurisdictions had more cases with osteosarcoma, and the central valleys, soft tissue sarcomas occupied third place, after leukemia and lymphoma. The incidence was lower than that expected for our country.
Conclusion: Further work which include all institutions that treat children with cancer are required, in order to know the magnitude of the problem.
