Inquiry of glaucoma

ABSTRACT

Background: glaucoma is the second cause of irreversible blindness in the world and the precocious detection is the only way of preventing it.
Objective: to identify patients with glaucoma risk or suspicion and glaucomatous patients through an investigation made on Medical Service of Ministry of the Interior.
Method: a descriptive study from January to December of 2011. From 645 civilians who came to the clinic of Medical Service, 231 patients were chosen with risk of glaucoma, obtained of the clinical records, it was definitive primary record and the variables were used: age group, sex, race, general personal history and familiar history of glaucoma, visual acuteness, deep eye examination, ocular tension, visual field; patients with risk or suspect of glaucoma were examined by the ophthalmologist with deep ocular examination, visual acuteness, ocular tension and visual field then they were diagnosed as: glaucomatous, suspect or risk of glaucoma. Data-process was made by the statistics program SPSS v-11.5 for Windows and descriptive statistic to obtain frequencies distribution and percents.
Results: the feminine sex was the 69.7 % of all risk patients; familiar history of glaucoma was 62.3 % and papillary excavation were found in more than 70 % to both eyes. The predominant personal history was hypertension and more than half of studied patients had high ocular tension.
Conclusion: one of each tree patients was chosen as risk of glaucoma, from them, 44.6 % was diagnosed as glaucomatous.
