Coma States and Consciousness Disorders: An Analytical Review since a Neurofunctional Approach

ABSTRACT

Consciousness is a complex neurobiological phenomenon where the individual is interacting with its environment; the several levels of consciousness are a result of the disruption of this interaction which produces different clinical phenomena. This paper reviews the alterations and the levels of consciousness. A literature search was conducted in the databases of Medline, Pubmed, Artemisa and LILACS from 1980 to 2012. The following key words were introduced for literature search: consciousness, levels of consciousness disorders of consciousness. We selected reviews of authorities in the field. In addition, classic texts and classic reports were included.
