ABSTRACT

A descriptive and cross-sectional study of 12 patients with acute renal failure, discharged from "Dr. Juan of the Cruz Martínez Maceira" Teaching Northern Hospital in Santiago de Cuba was carried out from July, 2008 to the same month of 2010, aimed at characterizing some clinical aspects in the case material. Age, sex, causes of the disease, hospital stay, treatment type and nursing procedures were among the analyzed variables. The information was processed through automated means with the system SPSS version 11.0. The absolute number and the percentages were used as summary measures for the statistical calculations. The affected patients of male sex (58.3%) and those younger than 1 year (41.7%) prevailed in the series. It was demonstrated that the fundamental cause of the acute renal failure was sepsis (25%), which was related with long hospital stays.
