Psychiatric morbidity in the puerperal gravidity period during years 2009 and 2011

ABSTRACT

Objective: to characterize the psychiatric morbidity in patients admitted at the Service of Perinatal Mental Health of the Educational General Hospital Enrique Cabrera from May 2009 to April 2011.
Methods: It was carried out a retrospective study of patients with psychopathological disorders or with the risk of suffering them, who were admitted during two years at the Service of Perinatal Mental Health of the Psychiatric Center José Galigarcía, of the Educational General Hospital Enrique Cabrera. For the diagnosis, approaches of Manual ICD-10 (International Classification of Mental Disorders- 10) were used, later it was related disorders with other variables such as: age, race, civil state, occupation and stay in the ward by means of tables, they were analysed, discussed and conclusions were emitted.
Results: of 168 patients that were admitted in the Service, 33 presented affective disorders, 29 schizophrenia in acute state and 20 mental and behavioural disorders associated with mental retardation. Of the group studied, 41 patients had between 21 and 25 years, 86 were white and 82 blacks, 79 were accompanied, 94 housewives and 58 were discharged in 7 days.
Conclusions: affective disorders were the most frequent diagnosis, alike the age group from 21 to 25 years, accompanied patients and housewives. The stay that prevailed was from 1 to 7 days.
