ABSTRACT

Temporal lobe epilepsy is one of the refractory forms of the disease because of its poor response to conventional antiepileptic drugs. An alternative is the resection of the ictal focus area. This paper reports the alterations of the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) in eight temporal lobe epileptic patients, before and after standard lobotomy. Subjective auditory threshold was evaluated before recording the ABR using monaural clicks. The tests were made before, six, twelve and twenty-four months after treatment. ABR’s were evaluated in terms of absolute latency, amplitude, and interpeak intervals of components. Eight gender and age matched normal subjects were studied too. We found statistically significant differences between groups in the absolute latency of waves III and V, and in the duration of interpeak intervals before lobotomy. These differences persisted after treatment, but additionally wave I prolonged its latency after the surgical treatment. A non statistical significant increase of the subjective auditory threshold was found in all cases. We conclude that, in some way, the resection of the ictal focus affect the functional state of the auditory system, suggested by an impairment of the peripheral component.
