Natural semantic network of the environmental subject in two contrast groups

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to make an example of the use of natural semantic networks as a way to compare the relative value of semantic organization indicators (M values) in two groups. This with the purpose to observe conceptual organization similarities among seven target concepts: environment, pollution, nature, city, ecology, deforestation, recycling. Two groups of students comprised by 57 biologists and 64 psychologists were selected for the study. Results suggest that similarity exists between all generated networks for the seven concepts in both groups, as demonstrated by a positive correlation. However, there are critical differences between the two conceptual organizations. For biology students the concepts of ecology and environment generated more academic type indicators, while psychologists generated environmental indicators of more common use. It is suggested that both groups have sufficient environmental information but with different meanings.
