ABSTRACT
The periapical cyst is an inflammatory lesion of the jaws, it’s developed
in the periapical area of teeth with pulp necrosis and infection, it is
considered as a direct sequel of an apical granuloma. The cyst
transformation occurs by stimulation of the epithelial rests of Malassez
that are present in the periodontal ligament, as a response to an
inflammatory stimuli. The advancement to the exterior of the pulp canals to
the periapical area by bacteria and toxins leads to an immune response. The
immune mechanisms are unleashed and relate directly with the pathogenesis
of periapical cysts and the cell immune response, it is mediated primarily
by T lymphocytes, as a humoral immune response, characterized by antibody
production that are part of the process. This article is a literature
review that focuses on the main immunologic events involved in the
periapical cyst pathogenesis with the purpose of a better understanding of
the biologic behavior of the lesion.
