ABSTRACT

One of the consequences of the obesity epidemic that has affected both developed and developing countries in recent years has been the very significant increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Mexico, which represents a major health problem given its high impact on the quality of life of those affected, and the huge emotional, economic, social and cultural cost that it entails. This metabolic disease is the best example of two-way association that can occur between a systemic disease and oral one, in which both diseases are mutually influential. Poorly controlled diabetes will negatively impact on already established periodontitis. Furthermore, by generating a considerable amount of systemically distributed inflammatory chemical mediators, periodontal disease induces insulin resistance, so making it more difficult to ensure metabolic control in the patient. Similarly, periodontal treatment will give rise to improved glycemic control and the results of periodontal treatment will be more predictable in patients whose diabetes is under control. In this paper, the second of a series of two, we review the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, and the preventive protocols that must be implemented in order to make use, for the benefit of the patient, of the synergy that exists between these two processes.
